Off the Beaten Plate: Baozza Brings Pizza and Baozi Together

Two months ago, in this very slot, we brought you Western-style jianbing, complete with cheese and bacon. Now it’s time for another East-meets-West fusion experiment in the shape of Baozza, a trademarked portmanteau referring to the union of pizza and baozi

The result is a selection of curiously herby steamed buns filled with classic pizza toppings. Bear with us. Because although the margherita variety is under-filled and rendered soggy by tomato sauce, the Sanlitun-based start-up has some better, brawnier options. The Hawaiian jalapeño Baozza is meaty and satisfying, and packs a punch you won’t find at your local hole-in-the-wall. The Meat Lover and BBQ chicken varieties are also surprisingly good.

Let’s be real: These fusion snacks won’t threaten the role that pizza and baozi play in your life (and purists of both Italian and Chinese food will balk at the combination). But they’re worth a try – even if it’s just to mix up your lunch routine.
